Unit 5.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Description of Site:

Bubbl.us is an online webbing tool to help people create mind webs. Once the mind webs are created they can be shared via email, Twitter, FaceBook, or Google+. They can also be shared and edited by other bubbl.us users. Bubbl.us users have the option of setting their mind webs to private, read-only by other users, or to enable other users to edit and comment freely. This is a newer, more innovative way to create webs that encourages collaboration.

Bubbl.us has four different pricing options available to users. There is a free option that comes with a limited number of mind map creations and saving and sharing options. There is also a monthly $6 amount or an annual $59 a year option that includes unlimited amount of web creations, sharing, and saving capabilities. The fourth option is a group pricing fee that would be ideal for businesses or schools to save money on multiple user accounts. The free option has ads, but the other three paid options do not.

Although there is not a specific section for teachers and students, there is an option to create a team. Teachers can create a classroom by making a list of users for each student. The teacher would become an administrator to that group, and can set assignments by posting them to the welcome page. Only users on the administrator's team would be able to view the posts. Likewise, the teacher can set the option so that only students in the classroom can see each other's work and edit or comment on each other's webs. This creates a secure setting for students to post their work.

This is a very appropriate tool for use in schools by teachers and students. With the correct amount of guidance, even early elementary students can learn to web online.

Educational Uses of Site

Bubbl.us can be used by teachers and students from elementary age all the way to middle or high school. This tool can be used for students to map out research or writing ideas before they begin the assignment. It would provide students guidance on appropriate content to include in their papers before they begin writing the actual paper. It can also be used as a collaborative tool in group projects for students to help each other come up with ideas for projects or presentations. Mind maps can also be created as formative assessment to see if students understand a story or concept well at that point. Since this is simply a tool to create mind maps online, any place a teacher would create a web on the board or on paper can be done using this tool with their students.

Review of Site

The site is extremely easy to use and navigate through. There are multiple tutorials for everything you would want to do with the mind maps from first creating them to saving, sharing, and editing them. The mind maps themselves are also very easy to create. It is similar to Kidspiration, but has publishing and sharing capabilities. There are also ways to create links within the web, add images, or files. This is a great way for students to safely collaborate with one another while creating webs online.
